How to Cleanse Your Liver

From teas to powders to capsules, it’s likely you’ve seen or heard about detox products that promise to increase your energy or manage your weight. The issue is that most of these products don’t deliver the promises they make. That is why you should read below to learn more about what liver detox is all about, how to cleanse your liver through the diet, and what products can support your liver function so you can feel your best.

What is liver detox?

Liver detox is a program in the form of a tea, capsule, powder, or other form that promises to improve your health by removing toxins or helping you to lose weight. Many of these detox products or programs can lead to dehydration by causing diarrhea or frequent urination, or nutrient deficiencies over time through very low calorie intake.

Can some liver detoxes be safe?

Your liver naturally filters out toxins from alcohol, drugs, and other waste products. But just like any organ, when you consume too much of such toxins, it can overwork your liver and make it less able to perform its other functions like digesting fats. This is where cleansing programs that involve eating more fruits and vegetables or drinking more water can help. The antioxidants in such foods can help reduce inflammation in the body and in turn improve overall function of the body.

Research on liver detox compounds

There are not any clear research findings that show liver health can improve from certain liver detox products or programs. However, there are studies that show that certain herbal compounds found in some of these products may help overall health if consumed in the right amounts as part of a balanced, healthy lifestyle.

For example, certain compounds like green tea and turmeric, which hold antioxidant value, can help reduce cell damage in the body. A 2025 study shows that consuming turmeric may help improve liver enzyme levels in the blood. A recent study on another herbal compound, milk thistle, shows that it can help improve metabolic health, and along with antioxidants, may help improve liver damage.

How to cleanse your liver naturally

You may wonder if there are ways to cleanse your liver through the foods you eat or fluids you consume. The answer to this is not conclusive, but there are some foods and food products that can help support a healthy liver. These foods and food products include:

  • Healthy fats like fatty fish and nuts: Omega-3 fatty acids from fatty fish and vitamin E from nuts both hold antioxidants that can reduce inflammation in the body, which may in turn help support liver health.
  • Olives and olive oil: Olives and olive oil contain vitamin E and other antioxidants that can help improve “good” HDL cholesterol levels, which in turn can support liver and heart health over time.
  • Coffee and tea: Coffee and teas like green tea hold antioxidants that research shows may help improve liver health.
  • Leafy green vegetables: Leafy greens like broccoli and spinach contain vitamin K as well as antioxidants. Vitamin K can help support the blood clotting function of the liver, while antioxidants can help reduce cell damage in the body.

How to cleanse your liver with supplements

Besides changes in your diet, there are also some detox supplements that can support your liver health. One product is Xymogen Liver Protect which contains the amino acid N-acetyl-L-cysteine, a key component of glutathione, which is a compound that plays a role in detoxification in the body. Other compounds in this supplement include the antioxidant-rich fatty acid ALA, or alpha-lipoic acid, as well as milk thistle extract, which research shows can help support and protect liver health. Just one capsule of Liver Protect by Xymogen twice daily can help your liver be at its best.

Another product that can help support your liver health is Premier Research Labs Liver-ND. This supplement contains compounds like molasses and milk thistle which research shows can help improve cholesterol and liver enzyme levels, respectively.  Just ½ teaspoon of this Liver-ND vegan, non-GMO powder by Premier Research Labs mixed in water or juice daily provides a probiotic-fermented formula that can help cleanse and support your liver today.

Finally, there is Quicksilver Scientific Push Catch Liver Detox which helps support the liver in a two-step process. In the first step, Dr. Shade’s Liver Sauce provides a blend of four herbal compounds like milk thistle and dandelion root, along with potent phytonutrients to help reduce inflammation and damage in the liver. In the second step, the Ultra Binder by Quicksilver Scientific contains compounds like bentonite clay and Arabic gum which research shows can help remove toxins from the blood. The liposomal delivery system of this supplement offers enhanced absorption so you can start feeling the effects of this supplement right away. And with prebiotic fibers to help support good bacteria growth, this supplement not only cleanses but also helps to nourish your body from the inside out.

As always, please be sure to consult your doctor before starting any nutritional supplement program during pregnancy or if you have a serious medical condition.
